Workforce Redesign

Workforce redesign is the process of analyzing and restructuring jobs at the task level to determine which tasks are best automated by AI, which are augmented by AI, and which remain fully human.

What this means in practice

The critical insight is that AI eliminates tasks, not jobs -- most roles are partially augmented, partially automated, and partially redesigned, with the human contribution shifting toward higher-value activities. An augmentation-automation spectrum ranges from full human execution (tasks requiring empathy, creativity, complex judgment) through AI-assisted, AI-augmented, AI-automated, to fully autonomous. Workforce redesign requires task-level analysis rather than job-level analysis to avoid binary, anxiety-inducing narratives. In the COMPEL framework, workforce redesign connects the People pillar to the Process pillar and is addressed in Module 1.6.

Why it matters

Workforce redesign at the task level is essential because AI eliminates tasks, not jobs. Organizations that perform only job-level analysis create binary, anxiety-inducing narratives that generate resistance. How COMPEL uses it

Workforce redesign connects the People pillar to the Process pillar and is addressed in Module 1.6. During Calibrate, roles affected by AI initiatives are analyzed at the task level. The Model stage defines the augmentation-automation spectrum for each affected role. The Organize stage designs reskilling programs based on task-level gaps, and the Evaluate stage measures whether workforce redesign is achieving the intended productivity and satisfaction outcomes.
