COMPEL Glossary / ai-capability-center
AI Capability Center
An AI Capability Center is an organizational unit that concentrates AI expertise, tools, and shared resources to serve the broader enterprise, representing an evolution beyond the traditional Center of Excellence (CoE) model.
What this means in practice
While a CoE typically focuses on standards and best practices, a Capability Center also owns reusable AI platform components, provides staffing and training, manages vendor relationships, and actively builds capabilities that business units can leverage. For organizations scaling AI beyond pilot projects, the Capability Center prevents each business unit from independently and inefficiently building the same foundational capabilities. In COMPEL, the design and evolution of AI Capability Centers is addressed in Module 4.4, Article 2, covering the progression from centralized CoE to federated models as organizational AI maturity increases.
Why it matters
When each business unit independently builds the same foundational AI capabilities, the result is duplicated effort, inconsistent quality, and wasted investment. An AI Capability Center concentrates expertise and shared resources to serve the broader enterprise, preventing fragmentation while enabling business units to move faster by leveraging pre-built platform components. The evolution from CoE to Capability Center reflects organizational maturation in AI delivery.
How COMPEL uses it
The design and evolution of AI Capability Centers is addressed at the AITGP level within the Organize stage, where organizational structures are designed to support enterprise AI delivery. The People pillar (D1-D4) assesses talent concentration and development, while the Process pillar (D5-D9) evaluates shared service delivery maturity. The progression from centralized CoE to federated Capability Center models is guided by the organization's maturity level as measured during Calibrate.
