Constructivism

Constructivism is a learning theory positing that people actively build their understanding by connecting new information to their existing knowledge, experiences, and mental models, rather than passively absorbing information transmitted by an instructor.

What this means in practice

Learning is seen as an active, contextualized process of constructing meaning rather than receiving pre-formed knowledge. For AI governance training, constructivism is important because participants are experienced professionals who learn best when new concepts are connected to their existing professional context and when they can construct their own understanding through discussion, case analysis, and practical application. In COMPEL, constructivism is one of the theoretical foundations for training design at the AITGP level, covered in Module 3.5, Article 2, and directly influences the case-study-based, discussion-heavy approach used across COMPEL certification programs.

Why it matters
