COMPEL Glossary / calibrate-compel-stage

Calibrate (COMPEL Stage)

Calibrate is the first of the six COMPEL stages, focused on producing an honest, evidence-based assessment of where the organization stands today in its AI transformation journey.

What this means in practice

The stage employs a structured maturity assessment across 18 domains organized within the four pillars of People, Process, Technology, and Governance. For the first cycle, Calibrate establishes the baseline that all future progress is measured against. For subsequent cycles, it measures progress and identifies emerging gaps. Key outputs include a domain-level maturity scorecard, gap analysis, structural imbalance map, risk register, and recommended priorities. COMPEL's Calibrate methodology resists institutional pressure to inflate scores through evidence triangulation -- no score is accepted based on a single source. Organizations that rush through Calibrate carry weakness through every subsequent stage.
