AI Platform Strategy
AI Platform Strategy is the enterprise-level approach to selecting, building, and integrating the technology foundation that supports all AI development, deployment, and operations across the organization.
What this means in practice
It encompasses infrastructure choices (cloud providers, on-premise, hybrid), AI development tools, data platforms, MLOps tooling, model serving infrastructure, and governance tooling. Platform strategy decisions are inherently strategic because they create multi-year commitments that shape what the organization can build, how fast it can iterate, and what talent it needs. In COMPEL, AI Platform Strategy is covered in Module 3.3, Article 2, where the AITGP is expected to architect the platform as a strategic capability rather than a technical procurement decision, considering build-versus-buy economics, vendor lock-in risks, and scalability requirements.
Why it matters
Platform strategy decisions create multi-year commitments that shape what an organization can build, how fast it can iterate, and what talent it needs. Poor platform choices lead to vendor lock-in, scalability constraints, and mounting technical debt that slows AI delivery. Organizations that treat platform selection as a procurement decision rather than a strategic capability choice frequently discover they have built on foundations that cannot support their transformation ambitions.
How COMPEL uses it
AI Platform Strategy is addressed within the Technology pillar during the Model stage, where the platform is architected as a strategic capability rather than a technical procurement decision. The Calibrate stage assesses the current technology landscape and identifies platform gaps. During Produce, platform components are implemented, and the Evaluate stage measures platform effectiveness including build-versus-buy economics, vendor lock-in exposure, and scalability against growing AI workloads.
